Battlefield nurse Claire Randall is in Scotland on a second honeymoon after World War II, when she mysteriously travels back in time to 1743. Falling in with a band of Highlands clansmen, she soon runs afoul of the local British authorities and is forced to marry a young man named Jamie Fraser to gain the protection of the clan. Romance, suspense, action, adventure — this book has a bit of everything, and then some.

Book Review
At its heart a romance, this first volume in the series (currently at 8 with a 9th book promised by the author) can be a bit slow-paced in places but has enough moments of action and utter beauty to more than make up for it. The characters and setting are gripping and one can’t help but be drawn in to the adventures of Claire and Jamie. That being said, I can’t stress enough the graphic nature of the medical procedures detailed throughout and the rape and torture sequence late in the book. Proceed with caution if those are not things you are comfortable reading about.
