Book Review
I really enjoyed this book. In fact, the first thing I said about, when I was only 30 pages in was that I sincerely hoped that someone would set an RPG in this world. Lev AC Rosen sure as hell can build a convincing and engaging setting. I would play the hell out of that game. Rosen layers a pretty classic noir mystery of intrigue, backstabbing and stolen priceless antiques over a future New York that’s been drowned by climate change and circumstance. While there aren’t a whole lot of original notions here, Rosen weaves them all together into a tight, well executed story. While I would have appreciated more character development the people in this story were really the backdrop for the extraordinary world Rosen made. I liked Simone and particularly enjoyed her dark sarcasm, but a lot of the supporting cast are more Standard Noir characters than three dimensional people. But, really that’s OK. The beautifully realized world these people live in more than makes up for the occasional cardboard cutout. Highly recommended for fans of classic mysteries, the BioShock series, Bladerunner and general post-apocalyptic worlds.
