A lot happened in the Agents of SHIELD season finale. Loss of limbs, murder, mayhem. No one will want to eat fish oil again, if they ever did. I’m fine with all that. Coulson will probably get an awesome new arm. Raina, Jiaying, and Cal will be missed, but villians can’t stick around forever in a hero show.
Here’s my true concern. What the heck happened to Simmons? A stone ATE her? Why would a stone eat her? Why would a magic-y alien stone designed to be lethal to Inhumans even want to eat a nice, normal woman like Simmons? My first thought was OMG it has to eat human souls to survive, and Simmons is dead! However, Elizabeth Henstridge assures us that she hasn’t been told to look for a new job. So definitely some form of Simmons will exist next season.
Let’s hope that form of Simmons won’t be a rock. I don’t want Elizabeth H. doing cheesy voiceovers like, “I rock” or “Don’t touch Lola” anytime people walk past the stone. I’m also hoping it isn’t a whole season of Simmons being under alien control. She can’t be cute with Fitz if she’s a rock, or under alien control. We already had a whole season of isn’t Fitzsimmons so sad apart. We don’t need even more apartness. Look at these two:

I trust my showrunners, though. This is what I think they’re actually up to. The Rock was created by the Kree to be lethal to Inhumans, but a lot of Inhumans have been around it, and it hasn’t attacked any of them. The Kree Rock fooled Simmons into opening its container pretty easily. So why didn’t it just trick Inhumans into opening the box and eat them? Or why didn’t it trick soldiers into letting it loose so it could go after Inhumans? Why did it wait, (besides mean writers), until Simmons was next to it, to use its fun powers?
I think this proves that magic Fraggle Rock doesn’t attack Inhumans directly. It needs someone to act for it. In this case it chose Simmons. What is it about Simmons that makes the Rock choose her? She has been anti-powers the entire season. Maybe the Rock is looking for an agent to carry out INHUMAN DOOM! Simmons did just try her hand at killing threats.
Perhaps the stone will nudge her towards destruction by showing her a future, or increasing her blood lust. Maybe she’ll get a magic Inhuman-killing touch, too. Or maybe it convinces her to make an Inhuman plague.
Another important question is if Jiaying is coloring her description of the stone with her prejudices. She doesn’t think much of humans. Perhaps by calling the stone “lethal”, Jiaying is actually saying it’ll remove their powers and fancy genes.
Whichever way the Rock works, I think it’ll act through Simmons. In which case it’ll definitely be awkward the next time Simmons and Skye are together. And that still won’t be as awkward as an alien-controlled date with Fitz!
